Biography
Thalia Truesdell is an innovative fiber artist
specializing in richly colored and textured tapestries. She
has always lived near water, growing up in Hawaii, and raising
her children on the Salmon River in Northern California. She
now lives near the Applegate River in southern Oregon. Her
love of nature and affinity with water are obvious in her work.
Thalia is a self taught weaver, and has
developed her own unique style over the last fifteen years. She spins and dyes most
of her own yarn, which allows her to recreate the colors and textures
that are the fabric of her life and surroundings. Much of Thalia's
inspiration springs from the driftwood she uses as a loom. She
frequently can visualize a finished weaving as she picks up and examines the
wood.
Thalia works from her heart, drawing on
memories and experiences. She often designs a weaving as she goes, allowing intuition to
guide her. Photographs form the basis of most of Thalia's commissioned
works, although she can weave people's fantasies, also. She
exhibits throughout the Northwest, and her exciting
tapestries illuminate numerous private collections.
A teacher by nature, Thalia resigned from
teaching kindergarten in 1986 to become a full time weaver. She
missed the children, however, and became involved in the Artist
In Education program.
She taught weaving and basketry throughout Oregon more than
twenty years.
